5 things that frustrate me about churches

Let’s get one thing straight: I’m pro church. I don’t have to be convinced that the local church is relevant and the primary vehicle through which God accomplishes his work on earth. My passion for His church is what led me to join the team at CCB in 2008. I LOVE working with churches and helping them be more effective at stewarding the people God has entrusted to them. But interacting with churches in a transactional or consultative process has — at times — left me dazed and confused.

Here are 5 things that really frustrate me about working with churches:

  1. I don’t like RFPs. If relationships matter so much to churches, why do some take such an impersonal approach? (I covered that one here and here.)
  2. There is often serious resistance to making the changes that REALLY matter. Changing your software alone won't fix systemic problems. (Check out Tony Morgan's Leisure Suit Trap for more insight.)
  3. Whoever came up with the saying, “Cheap is good. Free is better.” has provided justification for some poor technology decisions.
  4. Executive leadership often opts out of technology conversations. If they only knew how that handicaps their staff and their ministry goals, they would stop. (Dig in on this topic here.)
  5. Periods of frenzied activity and requests for immediate answers are often followed by weeks of dead silence. We are here to HELP you not sell you. If you simply explain how your situation has changed, I promise you we will understand!
