Dave Bair on how Northland utilized Church Community Builder to achieve maximum results: Part 1

Today I want to highlight how one church with a focused approach utilized Church Community Builder to achieve maximum results.

In January 2011, Northland Church launched a Stewardship project in conjunction with Dave Ramsey’s Momentum and Financial Peace University (FPU). In April 2010, a full eight months before the launch, Northland Church invested in a new technology solution, Church Community Builder. This investment was very intentional as this new software tool was aligned with their strategy and mission as a church. This FPU project, and the Church Community Builder Implementation had three major aspects: Leadership Alignment, Process Development and Tactical Launch. I’d like to focus on the first two aspects in today’s post.

Leadership Alignment is the critical first step in a project of this magnitude. That alignment must include conversations about...

  • Why are we doing this?
  • What do we hope to achieve?
  • Do we all agree this is the right thing to do, and worth doing?
  • Are we willing to do what it takes to be successful...really?

The Process Development phase is where that earlier leadership alignment takes its first step toward answering the question, “How are we going to do this?” In Northland’s case, their thought process was pretty straight forward. In order to make FPU successful, they needed to make it a church-wide priority and include everyone who wanted to participate. Anytime your goal is to engage a larger congregation (15,000 in this case), you need a solid process to make it a success.

For this project, they decided to create the communication and organizing infrastructure first (Church Community Builder and web tools), recruit leaders and train them second, and finally ask people to join those leaders in the journey. This approach takes much longer to get to the launch date, but the challenges are significantly reduced through the power of process (and patience).

Does the thought of all that preparation and planning months before a project launch rock your world a bit? Imagine what can be achieved if we lay the necessary groundwork before launching a new program.

Be sure and check back later this week for the rest of the story in which I’ll discuss more about Northland’s process.
