How to leverage data to fuel ministry growth

Technology has made it easier than ever for churches to leverage information to connect with church members and enhance their ministry. While learning how to leverage untapped data will be more difficult for some ministries than for others, churches that have learned how to do it have experienced a new level of ministry growth they never thought possible before.

We recently hosted a webinar with David Thoroughman, CEO of MortarStone, to talk about leveraging technology to fuel ministry growth. MortarStone provides a solution for pastors who want a better understanding of donor giving patterns, cycles, and trends. MortarStone’s system automatically identifies and surfaces ministry opportunities, donor behavioral changes, and much more.

How to leverage data to fuel ministry growth

Here are four key ideas from the webinar when it comes to leveraging data to fuel ministry growth:

  1. Measure and analyze data at both a macro and a micro level. Taking a look at the big picture is important. However, diving into the individual giving behaviors and growth in generosity within the lives of your individual church members is even more valuable. This is one reason why I believe every senior pastor should know who gives and how much.
  2. Benchmark data to determine a baseline. The first step is to identify a starting point. Without one, you have no idea whether or not you’re headed in the right direction.
  3. Develop key performance metrics for appropriate ministry leaders. Overall giving is just one metric your church should consider when leveraging data to fuel ministry growth. The 'untapped data' that can provide deeper insights is where the real opportunities are found.
  4. Automate the process. You can easily create reports to review on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis. Having these automated processes in place on the front end will make it a lot easier to develop the habit of evaluating the data.

Today’s technology allows churches to capitalize on a wealth of information and data. But you have to know what to do with it. One of the things we love about MortarStone is that it automatically distills that data into simple-to-understand, graphical report. If you want find greater clarity and objectivity when it comes to measuring the systems and processes that fuel ministry growth, I’d definitely encourage you to go back and watch the entire webinar.

What is keeping you from using data analytics to make decisions and implement real change in your ministry?
