One easy step to increase online giving for churches

Last month I started a thread on online giving for churches. There’s so much more to this topic than just talking about whether or not a church should do it. At least for the churches I interact with, it’s not a decision of “should” but “how.”

I want to give you a tip that will dramatically change the value of online giving to your church. It may seem basic, but it’s very effective and relatively easy to implement. It’s so simple you’ll probably underestimate its potential to increase online giving in your church.

Are you ready for it? Here it is:

Put a “give now” button on your home page.

Yep. It’s that simple. If people can’t immediately find this on your homepage, it’s likely they won’t stick around long enough to figure it out. So many churches bury their “online giving” feature so that only insiders can find it.

Anyone should be able to go to your church’s homepage and quickly get to the donations page. They shouldn’t have to make an account or provide loads of personal information when they want to give, particularly for the first time. They should be able to donate once—no strings attached.

Also, did you know people are more likely to click on buttons than links? And they’re even more likely to click on that button if it is in red rather than say, green?

As you can see, there’s a lot to learn about curb appeal when it comes to your church’s website and online giving. Putting that “give now” button on your home page is an important next step.

Have you made any specific changes to how online giving is featured on your website? What was the impact?
